044 Mind Hunger

"It's all in your head." You've probably heard that about a million times! I know that I have. Usually when people say that I just roll my eyes and sigh because they just don't get it. However, there are times that I would have to agree with them.

On occasion your brain reads things in peoples words and actions that aren't there. There are also the times that it tells you to do things out of habit. Or maybe you are really bored and your brain starts telling  you that you are sleepy but as soon as you quit whatever you are doing and start something else you are suddenly wide awake.

The human brain is an interesting organ. The mind is even trickier. Today I am sharing a video with you about the struggles Jimmy has had determining whether he is actually hungry or if it's just something his brain is telling him out of habit. I hope you enjoy!

043 Learning to Cope

Yesterday, I talked about an awesome and encouraging surprise Jimmy has waiting for him in his office. Today I want to talk about coping with surprises that aren't so pleasant.

As Jimmy heals, he has several weeks off from work. For the first couple of weeks we have also chosen to have church through the simulcast at home so that Jimmy won't be exposed to sickness or have hundreds of people wanting to hug him (which would press up against his incisions which are still tender). Jimmy has been doing amazingly well in his healing but we have felt a little disconnected with what has been going on. Thankfully, Jimmy's boss and our pastor (Aaron) was sensitive to this and decided to drop by our house on Saturday night and bring us up to speed.

We didn't know that when Aaron came over he would be telling us that he and his family (who we love!) had accepted a new position in New Jersey and that they would be leaving near the end of December. We had no clue he would be announcing that the very next morning but we soon found out. We are SUPER happy for this great opportunity and new experience that God has brought to the Robb family. They are going to do amazing and hopefully love every minute of it. But what about us?

Anytime you experience something unexpected--especially job related--their is always a certain amount of fear, stress, and uncertainty that comes with it. Jimmy has had experiences similar to this before and they weren't the best. Of course that doesn't mean it is going to be that way at McCarthy. The big question is what will we do? How will we handle it?

In the past, it would have been easy to turn to food. Although Jimmy is generally a "happy eater" there are times when it is easier to justify cheating because you are upset. That really isn't an option right now unless he wants to make himself really sick. I was impressed with Aaron's sensitivity when he told us that he waited until now to tell us so that Jimmy wouldn't be tempted to cheat on his two week liquid diet (which would have been very possible). There will be a time in the future when the fear of getting sick won't be there so it's important to take the time now to learn new methods of coping.

Hands down, the hardest part of losing weight (naturally or surgically assisted) and keeping it off is changing your mindset and habits. If you don't bother to change your patterns, behaviors, or habits then it won't matter if you had surgery or not because you will eventually find a way to put the weight back on. Losing weight is about changing your mind just as much if not more than changing your body.

After the initial shock passed, it was much easier to see how amazing this whole thing could be for everyone involved. We love and will dearly miss the Robb family but we know that God is sending them to New Jersey for a reason. We are also thankful that we get to use this experience to start retraining our minds now so that when other coping situations come along later they will be much easier to handle!

Aaron, Dana, Caleb, Kelsey, & Katie, Thank you for being an amazing part of our lives! You all will always be a part of us and part of the family of our heart. May God richly bless you in all that He has called you to do!

Grace and Peace,

042 A Nice Surpise

It has been a little while now since Jimmy has been in to work in the office. The church has kindly approved 3-6 weeks for his recovery time but I know that he is hoping to be back soon.

Jimmy loves his job and I think that he really misses socializing with his co-workers. When we were out the other day, we decided that we should stop by the church office so that Jimmy could say "Hi" to everyone. I think that they were surprised to see that he was as up and active as he is (Thankfully, Jimmy has had very limited pain and/or gas/bloating and he has been able to be up and active in small amounts).

We were surprised when we walked into his office and found this...

An anonymous note left for Jimmy on his computer screen at work.
"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

It's really awesome and encouraging to know that people are thinking about you and praying for you. It was a sweet and touching moment. Thank you, whoever you are. It's nice to be reminded that we are not alone and that we can do all things through Christ!

Until next time...

041 Gastric Sleeve Stage 2 Diet

Morning. Morning. I hope you have been staying up on everything that has been happening around here lately. If not then feel free to read back a little to get caught up or to find out what the heck I am going on and on about :) Anyway, if you have been following Jimmy's journey then you have probably been wondering what exactly this Stage 2 diet I keep talking about really is. Well, today I am going to tell you!

Before I get into that, I wanted to stop and say a HUGE THANK YOU to my Mom (Janice) who came up and stayed with us for the whole first week after Jimmy's surgery. Mom being here took a ton of stress off me and allowed me to be able to go to work (since I have limited vacation time) and know that there would be someone at home to help Jimmy (and keep him in line :) . Things really would have been a whole lot harder without her around. Thanks, Mom! You are greatly appreciated and we couldn't have done it without you!

Mom and me enjoying our time together!

040 Post-Op Week One Update!

Jimmy and Krystal at Jimmy's first Post-Op
Appointment on November 21, 2012.
I can't believe it's already been over a week since Jimmy's gastric sleeve WLS! Can you?! I mean seriously, where does the time go!

Anyway, life has been hectic around here with the surgery and Thanksgiving and family. So I feel like I am running a little behind. So let's take two seconds to catch up a little...

Jimmy's surgery was on Friday, November 16th. He came home from the hospital on Saturday, November 17th. His first post-op appointment was a little early because of the Thanksgiving holiday so it was on Wednesday, November 21st. At this appointment he met with the lovely Krystal (Nutritionist) and Dr. Hornbostel. They cleared him to move on to his stage two diet. Which meant that Jimmy was able to have mashed potatoes for his Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, November 22nd. *Whew* Now I think we are up to speed.

Today, I am sharing with you Jimmy's Post-Op Week One vlog so he can tell you what's going on in his own words. I am also posting the really short video he recorded the day after his surgery because I forgot to post it earlier (sorry about that).

Hope you have fun watching this update!

Grace and Peace,

039 Our Thanksgiving

Your patience has been rewarded! The internet is back up and running and I am home from work to upload the pictures of our Thanksgiving! Jimmy has his first post-op doctor appointment this week and the surgeon cleared him to go on to his stage two diet just in time to have some mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving. I will talk more about the Stage Two diet next week. For now, here are the pictures from the Mustion Thanksgiving. Hope you enjoy!

We celebrated my sister's 20th birthday. With her favorite pumpkin pie.

She opened her present from us...

It's Brave!

She also got body wash from Mom & Dad.

Jimmy eating his first stage two meal: 1 egg, scrambled.

Same pic Instragrammed.

Jimmy's Thanksgiving dinner -- Mashed Potatoes with Velveeta.

Yes, they had to be thinned with milk before he could eat them.

POST DELAYED

Hey, everyone! Happy Day After Thanksgiving! So I woke up this morning expecting to post pics and Jimmy's first week post-op update and found out the internet at our house was out AGAIN. It has been out on and off for the last couple days. So annoying! Anyway, just dropping you a quick line from work to let you know that I will attempt to post pictures at 7:00 P.M. tonight if the internet is working when I get home and I will post Jimmy's One Week Post-Op update video on Monday.

Sorry for the delay! Happy Holidays!

038 It Feels Like Forever

I always smirk at those people who tell you "See you next year!" on New Year's Eve. It's a big joke that it sounds like you aren't going to see one another for a long time when it is really a matter of hours/minutes. I had this feeling the other day when I was talking to Jimmy about eating.

For anyone who is really behind, Jimmy has been doing a two week pre-op liquid diet in preparation for his gastric sleeve WLS. He hasn't eaten any solid food since Friday, November 2nd. It really seems like it has been forever since we sat down for a regular meal.

More mind boggling still is the fact that Jimmy won't be able to eat regular solid foods again until sometime in January! When you say January it just feels like it is so far, far away. Yes, it really is weeks away but in the grand scheme of things life will be back to normal sooner rather than later. It just doesn't feel that way right now.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it is all a matter of perspective. When you think about the number of years and choices it took to get us into this bad position versus the time we have invested to this point in correcting it--we still have a long way to go! However, it is totally achievable. We just have to keep our perspective fixed on why it is worth it to keep trying!

Don't give up on your goals! You can make it! Victory is closer than it seems.

037 Jimmy's Surgery Day in Pictures

Hello, everybody. How do you do? My name's.... Oh wait I think I just ripped that off a song. Oops :) Anyway, today Jimmy is going in for his first post-op appointment. We are really excited that Dr. Hornbostel wanted to see him on Wednesday (because of the Thanksgiving holiday) instead of making him wait until the following Monday. Friday will be one week since Jimmy's surgery. Obviously I don't have any information about his appointment yet so I wanted as this point so I thought I would share all the surgery day pics with  you instead. I hope you enjoy Jimmy's surgery day in pictures.

036 My Favorite Things

Well, Friends, we are into the post-op now. I don't know if I will be updating quite as frequently as I have been but I will definitely attempt to be on here no less than once a week to let you know what is going on in our world. It's hard to know what all I should write about now so if you have questions feel free to message me because it may spark an idea for me and that would be much appreciated.

I did want to take this opportunity to talk about a few of my (Christiana's) favorite moments over the last few weeks. The pre-op liquid diet was really hard and stressful. Then we were straight into the surgery and now we are in post-op. I just wanted to take time to be thankful for the really good/funny moments that happened so that they won't be lost.

I decided the best way for me to share my favorite things with you was by posting pictures of them. So here they are, Christiana's favorite things:

We had really awesome support.
This is a conversation between Jimmy & Melissa
about the day that Melissa did the liquid diet w/ him.
This was Melissa's husband's response to their
conversation as posted on Facebook.

Jimmy was really sweet and wrote some supper nice
things about me so I felt that needed some recognition.

The kids from our church's daycare absolutely love Jimmy
and they got him some toys to help him get well soon.

035 Jimmy's Surgery Day

Jimmy right after he checked into the hospital
for his surgery. 44 lbs lost on the pre-op diet!
If you didn't know, Friday was the day! Jimmy and I went to Heartland bright and early for his gastric sleeve WLS. Everything went amazing and they were even able to take Jimmy back for surgery about an hour early. I have a clip for you today and we recorded around 12 hours post-op. I did the narrating for this clip because Jimmy's throat was dry and a little sore from surgery. I hope you enjoy it anyway :)

Also, today's picture was taken directly after Jimmy checked in for his WLS. We also found out that Jimmy has lost 7 more pounds on the pre-op liquid diet between when he weighed on Wednesday and when they were prepping him for surgery on Friday. So that was really exciting news and a great way to start the day!

034 Week 2 Pre-Op Liquid Diet Update

Heartland Regional Medical Center
This is where Jimmy is having his surgery done.
Good morning, everyone! Today's the day. Jimmy and I are at the hospital as we speak, and we are getting ready for his surgery. Jimmy is scheduled to go into to surgery at 9:00am if all goes according to schedule (but we all know how doctors and hospitals are).

Anyway...

While we are having all of our "fun" I wanted to give you a chance to find out how the second week of Jimmy's two week pre-op liquid diet went. Again, he recorded a little video for you every day and I have compiled them into this week two update.

I hope you enjoy the video and I ask that you keep Jimmy in your prayers as he begins this new chapter of his life today!

033 Thursday is NOT Jimmy's Friend

Good morning and welcome to Thursday. Normally Thursdays are pretty good. The week is half over and it's almost Friday. However, this week I have have a feeling that Thursday is not going to be a friend in the Mustion Mansion (that's what nicknamed our house).

The reason that I feel this way is valid. #1 Today is the last day before Jimmy goes in to have his WLS. So we are making lots of last minute preparations. We are welcoming my parents and a friend who in to stay while they help us out the next couple of days. But the real reason that Thursday is not our friend this week is because #2 Jimmy has to drink a doctor prescribed 10oz liquid laxative. YUCK! So pardon my bathroom humor, but things are going to be poopy around here. Sorry if that's TMI.

So please be praying for Jimmy today. On the prayer note (not the poopy one) I also wanted to make today better by showing you a clip of the wonderful support that we have been receiving from our church. I hope you enjoy watching it, and please remember to keep praying for Jimmy.

Jimmy weighed in yesterday and found out that he had lost 37 POUNDS
on his liquid diet! Congrats, Jimmy!
