049 Commonly Asked Questions

Morning, everyone! It is now three weeks to the day since Jimmy had his gastric sleeve weight loss surgery. It is simply amazing how quickly time passes. We are still on the long road of changing our lifestyle so that he can continue to have success in his weight loss, but we are making it.

As time passes, more and more questions arise about weight loss surgery and what the experience is like. I know we did this massive 20 Questions post a few weeks back, but I have decided that from time to time I will post additional Q&A posts to answer a few of the current questions we have been encountering.

Q: Does gastric sleeve weight loss surgery affect your breath capacity or activities related to lung capacity such as singing/swimming/etc.?

A: No. Gastric sleeve WLS reduces the size of your stomach. It does not effect lung capacity or the function of your diaphragm. Of course, the hospital will give you breathing tests before you are released from care but this has more to do with the anesthesia and the surgical process rather than the gastric sleeve itself.

Q: Is irritability common during the pre-op liquid diet?

A: In general I would suppose that the answer to this would be yes but I am sure that it varies from person to person. If you get cranky when you are hungry now then you should expect to be irritable and cranky when you are on the pre-op liquid diet. Every program is different so the pre-op foods you are allowed may be vastly different than mine were but you can read more about my pre-op liquid diet here.

Q: How soon will I be able to go back to work after surgery?

A: You can return to work after you have been cleared to do so by your surgeon. If you have a desk job this may be as soon as two weeks. The more physical your job is the longer it is likely to take to return to work. Talking to your surgeon about your particular circumstances are very important. Also, keep in mind that you need to take some time to make mental and emotional adjustments to your new stomach and eating habits. These adjustments may be harder than you anticipate.

Q: What has been the hardest part of your first 3 weeks of post-op life?

A: The social adjustments. You need to find other ways to celebrate life, family, and friends. You also will mourn some of your favorite foods that you either can't eat right away or may never be able to eat again. Plus, you begin to realize for the first time just who big of a role food played in your pre-surgery life and it can be really hard to face those facts and changes.

Q: What is your appetite like after the surgery?

A: Jimmy hasn't had much of an appetite. In the past three weeks there has only been one or two days that I can remember him saying that he is really hungry. I believe that Jimmy's appetite reduction is due in part to the reduction of his stomach and part because he is getting tired of eating the foods he is allowed in his diet at this time.

Well, everyone, I hope that these Q&As helped answer some of your thoughts. Like I said, I will make posts like this periodically so if you have questions just message us and we will try to answer you and possibly get your question up here next time. Hope you have a great day!

038 It Feels Like Forever

I always smirk at those people who tell you "See you next year!" on New Year's Eve. It's a big joke that it sounds like you aren't going to see one another for a long time when it is really a matter of hours/minutes. I had this feeling the other day when I was talking to Jimmy about eating.

For anyone who is really behind, Jimmy has been doing a two week pre-op liquid diet in preparation for his gastric sleeve WLS. He hasn't eaten any solid food since Friday, November 2nd. It really seems like it has been forever since we sat down for a regular meal.

More mind boggling still is the fact that Jimmy won't be able to eat regular solid foods again until sometime in January! When you say January it just feels like it is so far, far away. Yes, it really is weeks away but in the grand scheme of things life will be back to normal sooner rather than later. It just doesn't feel that way right now.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it is all a matter of perspective. When you think about the number of years and choices it took to get us into this bad position versus the time we have invested to this point in correcting it--we still have a long way to go! However, it is totally achievable. We just have to keep our perspective fixed on why it is worth it to keep trying!

Don't give up on your goals! You can make it! Victory is closer than it seems.

035 Jimmy's Surgery Day

Jimmy right after he checked into the hospital
for his surgery. 44 lbs lost on the pre-op diet!
If you didn't know, Friday was the day! Jimmy and I went to Heartland bright and early for his gastric sleeve WLS. Everything went amazing and they were even able to take Jimmy back for surgery about an hour early. I have a clip for you today and we recorded around 12 hours post-op. I did the narrating for this clip because Jimmy's throat was dry and a little sore from surgery. I hope you enjoy it anyway :)

Also, today's picture was taken directly after Jimmy checked in for his WLS. We also found out that Jimmy has lost 7 more pounds on the pre-op liquid diet between when he weighed on Wednesday and when they were prepping him for surgery on Friday. So that was really exciting news and a great way to start the day!

034 Week 2 Pre-Op Liquid Diet Update

Heartland Regional Medical Center
This is where Jimmy is having his surgery done.
Good morning, everyone! Today's the day. Jimmy and I are at the hospital as we speak, and we are getting ready for his surgery. Jimmy is scheduled to go into to surgery at 9:00am if all goes according to schedule (but we all know how doctors and hospitals are).

Anyway...

While we are having all of our "fun" I wanted to give you a chance to find out how the second week of Jimmy's two week pre-op liquid diet went. Again, he recorded a little video for you every day and I have compiled them into this week two update.

I hope you enjoy the video and I ask that you keep Jimmy in your prayers as he begins this new chapter of his life today!

029 Pre-Op Week 1 Update

Friday! Friday! Getting down on Friday! Ok, now that I have had my Rebecca Black moment I can get to work. So I have been promising more videos from Jimmy and today you are going to get it!

Jimmy has been recording daily video diaries about his experiences during week one of the pre-op liquid diet. I have compiled all of this weeks clips into one video for you that I am posting right here--right now! No editing has been done to the actual video clips so you will see and hear everything that Jimmy has recorded for you. The video is about 6 minutes long and I hope you enjoy it.

But real quick before I post the video I want to say a BIG THANKS to our friends, the Grieve Family, who live in Arizona. Feeling the love and support from you guys. Thanks for the Flintstones vitamins that you sent from our WLS Wishlist on Amazon. We still have a lot of things that we need to buy to get ready for the surgery and beyond. THANK YOU!!!

Now on to the show!

026 Be Prepared!

I know it's stupid but one of my favorite songs from the Lion King was when Scar and the hyenas were singing the "Be Prepared!" song. The hyenas didn't really get it and I don't think that we always get the importance of being prepared either. So let me tell you why Jimmy and I find it important to be prepared as it specifically relates to the liquid diet he starts today and his gastric sleeve surgery in two weeks.

#1 Being prepared makes the transition easier
I am in NO way going to say that this liquid diet is going to be a walk in the park but I know it would be so much harder if we weren't ready. What if we hadn't gone through the house getting rid of all the temptations lurking in the fridge and cabinets? What if I hadn't planned ahead and bought the foods that he will need to have on hand so succeed? What if we hadn't been trying to eat healthy for the last couple of years to prepare for healthier living and eating post-op? Things could be even worse!

#2 Being prepared has helped us with our finances
Much to Jimmy's sometime annoyance I am a HUGE Dave Ramsey fan! We were blessed to be able to go through Financial Peace University (FPU) several years ago and since then we have been on our way to financial freedom. Let me tell you that we still aren't perfect.

However, we are much better than we used to be and "Uncle Dave" has taught us some really important lessons about preparing financially. This applied here as well. As soon as we had decided which Pre-Op diet we were doing I began to set money aside and I would also purchase an item or two a week over the last few months. This allowed us to spread out the cost instead of freaking out about the bill coming all at once or being tempted to put it on a credit card (that we don't have).

#3 Being prepared allowed us time to recruit
Since we were planning and preparing ahead we were able to recruit our support team at our leisure. We know these people are going to really be there for us because they have a proven track record. We aren't asking them on a whim or last minute. Over the last few months and years they have shown that they really care about us and support us. We don't have to worry about it--which is amazing!

So I urge you, if you are still preparing for WLS I urge you to begin preparing physically, financially, and mentally for the many challenges that lie ahead!

025 Ode to Jeff Foxworthy

This weekend Jimmy and I were experiencing all the nuances of being on a liquid diet for the first time. While I was preparing one of our meals I began to think about just how funny it all was. The funniest thing was that it popped into my head in the form of one of Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be a Redneck" jokes. So I decided to test a couple of my thoughts on Jimmy. Well...he laughed so I thought I would share a few of them with you.

An Ode to Jeff Foxworthy:
Top 5 "You Might Be on a Liquid Diet" Jokes

5. You might be on a liquid diet if you have 4 empty gallon milk jugs in your trash at the end of the week.
4. You might be on a liquid diet if your dishwasher is full of cups but no plates or silverware.
3. You might be on a liquid diet if you have more Gatorade and Crystal Light in your kitchen than the local high school locker room.
2. You might be on a liquid diet if you crave Jell-O to "fill you up".
1. You might be on a liquid diet if the answer to "What Do you want for Dinner?" is either chocolate or vanilla.

I hope you had a laugh readying our little jokes. If you have your own Liquid Diet jokes, please feel free to add them to the comments below. We love your thoughts and comments.

Also, if you are interested in how Jimmy is doing on his liquid diet he will be posting a vlog on Friday which contains clips he has been recording over his first week of the liquid diet. It should be pretty interesting so make you come back on Friday to see it.

Grace and Peace,

MORE Liquid Diet Jokes
- You might be on a liquid diet if you suddenly see food in every TV show, commercial, or movie you watch.

024 Prepping for the 2 Week Pre-Op Liquid Diet

TODAY IS THE DAY!!! Jimmy starts his two week pre-op liquid diet today. We will be giving you updates on how he is doing along the way.

Yesterday, Jimmy and I really started cracking down and getting ready for today's kick-off. As many of you who follow Jimmy on Facebook know he celebrated his "Last Day" yesterday. I am going to post the pics of two of his "last meals" here so that you can see some of the things Jimmy is really going to miss. Then make sure to check out the video of Jimmy cleaning out the kitchen in preparation for his liquid diet.

It's all right here on Jimmy Goes Gastric!

023 Pre-Op Liquid Diet (2 Weeks)

Good morning, everyone! Tomorrow Jimmy will be starting his Pre-Op Liquid Diet. Before I get into all the specifics of what Jimmy is going to be doing, I want to remind you that every WLS program is different. This is the liquid diet that was given to Jimmy by his surgeon and it may differ from the diet either you or someone you know were asked to follow. Also, please remember that you should always consult your personal doctor before trying a new dietary program.

Ok, now that all the technical items are out of the way we can get down to business!

As I said, tomorrow Jimmy will be starting his 2 Week Pre-Op Liquid Diet as perscribed by Dr. Hornbostel. The purpose of the liquid diet is to help Jimmy drop a few pounds before the surgery, prepare his body for smaller amounts of food intake, and to cleanse his system before undergoing operation.

Heartland Bariatric Center has designed specialized diets for men and women for each type of surgery they offer. They even offer two different options for men undergoing the gastric sleeve! Through some discussion about taste, amount of food allowed, and cost of supplies this is the option that Jimmy and I decided upon for him:

DAILY

  • Five Cups (40oz.) of 2% milk, each with No-Sugar added Carnation Instant Breakfast
  • One Cup (8oz.) of 100% fruit juice
  • At least 48-64oz. of other liquids (from the allowed liquids list) daily
ALLOWED LIQUIDS
  • Water
  • Diet V-8 Splash, V-8 juice or Tomato Juice (Not a chance Jimmy will try these)
  • Sugar-Free Jell-O
  • Sugar-Free Popsicles (Less than 15 calories per serving)
  • Fruit 2-O
  • Crystal Light (Jimmy was really excited about this one!)
  • Diet Snapple (Not a Chance)
  • Up to 2 Cups of broth (unlikely)
  • Decaf coffee, tea (Not a Chance--I know he's weird, right?)
  • Powerade Zero/Gatorade Zero
Now that you know what Jimmy is in for I really ask that you will keep him in your prayers. Other people have said that they have experience hunger, irritability, and fatigue during the first few days of their liquid diets. So I am sure that things are going to be really fun at our house!

Also, pray for us as we continue to make Post-Op Preparations too.

Grace and Peace,

021 Gotta Have Support!

This post is going to stray a little bit back into our chronological storyline and then come back to the present…

Ok, so back to the Dr. Appointment Blitz day. One of the things that was really emphasized to us was the need for support, and I know that we have talked about Making New Friends but here is where the rubber meets the road…

Now jump back to the present. Jimmy and I have been slowly building a great network of people that we can talk to and rely on for support. They have been amazing! Some of them are regular people that we see regularly, others are old friends, and still others have undergone weight loss surgery themselves.

These people have been encouraging us to eat healthy and exercise, but they have taken support a step further than just using their words! On Friday (Nov. 2nd), Jimmy will be starting his two week liquid pre-op diet, but he won't be alone. In order to support and empathize with Jimmy during this time, our support team has taken it upon themselves to arrange a rotation schedule so that at least one of them is doing the liquid diet with Jimmy every SINGLE day!

He will never be alone in his hunger or frustration. He can look at his list and he can see who his "diet buddy" is for the day and he can call them up and talk it out. We are super excited and touched by this amazing outpouring of support and love that Jimmy has specifically received in this area.

A BIG thank you to all our friends and especially to our support team as we prepare to enter the hardest two weeks in our lives to date.

Thanks again,
